It’s now accepted that the US has moved to contain China, including financial, trade and national security pressures backed by a huge US domestic fiscal, deregulatory and tax stimulus. (see my January 2018 newsletter)
This US containment comes at a time when Crazy Rich Asians (CRA) has surged up the box office charts. But is this movie the swansong for CRA’s, or the just the start of what is to come?

Speaker Biography
David Chin
Managing Director, Basis Point
David Chin founded Basis Point 20 years ago to provide insights, connections, and investment platforms for the Aus-China & Aus-Asia institutional, wholesale and high-net-worth investment community. His has become a ‘thought-leader’ in the Significant Investor Visa (SIV) and Chinese investment flows into Australia.
As a second generation Australian with a Malaysian-Chinese heritage, he is keen to facilitate greater engagement between recent Chinese/Asian migrants and expats with the wider Australian community.
His career background is in derivatives, futures and hedge funds, consulting to government and semi-government institutions and exchanges globally and in the Asia-Pacific. He was previously Head of Marketing at Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE), and is the author of Thy Fiefdom Comes, a fantasy/science fiction novel.
Vera Ou-Young
Deloitte Australia Chinese Services Group Leader
Vera joined Deloitte as a Partner in August 2017 as National Leader of Chinese Services Group. Vera is an Asian-Australian relationship specialist, and is seen by her senior colleagues as an architect of East-West success.
She is a versatile senior executive with extensive industry, client relationship and business development experience. Being fluent in a breadth of Asian languages, as well as having the ability to adapt to different Asian cultural settings, Vera brings strong and innovative insights to Asian business.
Vera has been instrumental as a key contributor to the 2016 ‘Australia’s Diaspora Advantage: Realising the potential for build transnational business networks with Asia’ national research report.
She also actively participated on the Expert Panel for “Leading in the Asian Century”, a National Barometer research project of Diversity Council Australia, which is establishing the first-ever ‘Australian workforce in the Asian Century’ national benchmarks through a nationally representative survey of Australian workers on Asia capability and diversity and inclusion experiences in the Asian Century.
Timothy Cheung
Timothy Cheung, Partner and CIO/Portfolio Manager, LSL Partners
Mr Cheung is a co-founder of LSL Partners, an independently owned, boutique funds manager, created to offer Australian and international investors a skilled and differentiated approach to investing in Asia.
A combination of the right people, with deep Asian experience, based on fundamental investment research and an alignment with our investors’ interests, is the foundation upon which LSL Partners is built.
Mr. Cheung has successfully built and led investment teams for more than 15 years. At Perpetual Investments and Morphic Asset Management he focused on Asian investments as a Senior Analyst and Head of Research respectively. Previously, Cheung founded a boutique market neutral fund also predominately investing in Asia.
Since 2010, Cheung has delivered compound annualised returns exceeding 16% p.a., significantly outperforming both hedge fund and equity indices across a number of styles and market conditions.
Mr. Cheung holds a Master of Business Administration (Honours) degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds a Master of Commerce (Honours) degree and a combined Bachelor of Commerce/Laws degree from the University of New South Wales
